The Whimzey Twinz

Todd Ramquist and Kiaralinda met as neighbors and became friends in a middle school art class. Since then, they've been practically inseparable. Together, they are the art duo known as the Whimzey Twinz. They bought their home in Safety Harbor in 1985 and have turned it into a living work of art, slowly transforming to the cultural landmark that it is today.

The Birth of WhimzeyLand

Their story began with the creation of WhimzeyLand, their personal home-turned-art-environment. What started as a simple property evolved into a kaleidoscope of color and creativity when Todd and Kiaralinda went to a flea market and someone was giving away free bowling balls. WhimzeyLand, now often referred to as the “Bowling Ball House” because of its many decorated bowling balls, is a quirky and playful haven for art lovers. The property is adorned with mosaics, hand-painted sculptures, and recycled materials, all combining to create a space that exudes joy and inspires imagination. Over the years, it has attracted visitors from all over the world, earning its place on the map as a must-see folk art environment.

WhimzeyLand is what is considered an "Art Environment". Art environments are spaces in which an artist(s) spends a lifetime turning their home into a physical work of art. Todd and Kiaralinda are also considered folk artists as they have had no formal training in the arts. Not only do they live in an art environment, but they have visited many famous art environments around the world, such as Howard Finster's Paradise Garden, Nek Chand's Rock Garden of Chandigarh, and more. They also have an extensive collection of art by other folk artists, often acquired through friendship or bartering their own work.

Inspiration for The Future

Building on the success of Whimzeyland, and inspired by the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland, Todd and Kiaralinda (along with their friend Heather Richardson) set out to create a larger space to foster creativity and community. With the support of a grant from the Pepsi Refresh Project and countless contributions from friends, neighbors, and supporters, they brought SHAMc to life.

Opened in 2015, the Safety Harbor Art and Music Center is a dynamic venue that hosts concerts, art exhibits, workshops, and festivals, all aimed at celebrating the arts and connecting people. The SHAMc building is covered in mirror mosaics and whimsical artwork and has become a tourist stop for many passing through Pinellas County.

A Lifelong Commitment to Creativity

Beyond their work in Safety Harbor, Todd and Kiaralinda have participated in countless art projects, installations, and exhibitions around the globe. Their work often incorporates recycled materials, vibrant patterns, and an unwavering sense of playfulness. They are passionate about giving back, whether through mentoring young artists, creating community projects, or supporting other creatives in their endeavors.

Continuing the Legacy

Today, Todd and Kiaralinda remain dedicated to spreading joy and fostering creativity. Through Whimzeyland, SHAMc, and their artistic endeavors, they continue to inspire others to dream big, embrace color, and find beauty in the unexpected.

Their story is a reminder that art has the power to transform not only spaces but also communities—and that with a little imagination, anything is possible.
