STEAM Camp 2026 with Lisa Casey

SHAMc STEAM Camp gave young makers the chance to explore science, technology, engineering, art and math through hands-on projects that encouraged creativity, collaboration and problem-solving.
STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. This approach combines creative thinking with practical problem-solving, encouraging campers to ask questions, design solutions, test their ideas and learn through hands-on experimentation.
Led by guest instructor Lisa Casey, campers spent the week imagining, designing and building their way through a variety of challenges. Each activity invited them to think like artists, engineers and inventors while turning their ideas into something they could see, test and improve.
One of the week’s biggest projects was the creation of SHAMc City. Campers worked together to imagine a community of their own, designing and constructing buildings, spaces and other elements that brought the city to life. The project encouraged them to think about how individual pieces could fit together to create one larger, connected environment.
Campers also created robot sculptures using a wide variety of materials. These were not just decorative robots, each one was designed to solve a problem the camper had noticed in the world. The project challenged participants to identify a need, imagine a useful solution and communicate that idea through art and construction. The finished robots reflected each camper’s personality, interests and inventive thinking.
The week also included a marble roller coaster challenge. Campers designed and built their own tracks, experimenting with height, curves, speed and momentum as they worked to guide a marble successfully from beginning to end. When a design did not work on the first try, campers adjusted, rebuilt and tested again, learning that trial and error is an important part of both engineering and the creative process.
SHAMc STEAM Camp was a week of curiosity, experimentation and joyful problem-solving. We are grateful to Lisa Casey for guiding the campers through these creative challenges and to all of the young makers who helped build a city, invent helpful robots and send marbles racing through their handmade roller coasters!
