2D Mystery Camp 2026

SHAMc’s 2D Mystery Camp invited young artists to explore several different ways of creating art on a flat surface while experimenting with line, shape, texture, color and composition.

Throughout the week, campers worked with a variety of artists and techniques, discovering how many different forms two-dimensional art can take. Each project introduced a new process while encouraging campers to develop their own ideas and personal style.

Cristi Lopez guided campers through drawing activities, helping them strengthen their observation skills and explore how lines, shapes and details can bring an idea to life. Campers learned that drawing is not only about making something look realistic- it can also be a way to communicate personality, movement and imagination.

Heather Rippert introduced the group to collage, showing campers how separate images, colors and textures can be combined to create something entirely new. By cutting, layering and arranging different materials, campers experimented with composition and learned how unexpected combinations can tell a story or create a mood.

Campers also explored printmaking by creating linocut-style designs on erasers. They carved their own images into the eraser surfaces, added ink and printed the designs onto paper. This process gave them the opportunity to think carefully about positive and negative space, repetition and how an image changes when transferred from a carved block to a finished print.

Because each activity used a different set of tools and materials, campers were encouraged to remain curious and flexible. They sketched, cut, carved, rearranged and printed, learning that the creative process often involves experimenting, making adjustments and trying again.

2D Mystery Camp was a week of discovery, artistic exploration and hands-on fun. We are grateful to Cristi Lopez and Heather Rippert for sharing their talents with the campers, and to all of the young artists who filled the week with bold ideas, inventive compositions and one-of-a-kind creations.
