Handmade Paper Castings

MEET THE ARTIST

Barbara Melby-Burhans

Media Specialization:

I make each cast paper wall sculpture by casting cotton linter into one of my original molds. The resulting handmade paper casting is then individually painted and decorated by hand. Finally, the piece is coated with an acrylic sealer, so they can withstand high humidity, resist fading, and become much more durable.

My lightweight cast paper wall sculptures of sea life and other critters are great for bathrooms, kitchens, children’s rooms, etc. They are fun and easy to hang.

I graduated from St. Cloud State University in Minnesota with a BFA in 1980. After graduation I moved to Florida to pursue an art career. My background was painting but soon I fell in love with making handmade paper. My early work was a combination of handmade paper and weaving. Later I started casting paper pulp into molds and painting the castings. The castings were sold all over the US at shops and galleries. I, also started a gallery in Dunedin, Florida that sold my artwork, my husband’s pottery (Ira Burhans) along with about 75 other regional and national artists and crafts people.

Now retired, I still enjoy making my cast paper wall sculptures.
