MEET THE ARTIST

When I was in HS, I visited my sister, an art major at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and I threw my 1st pot. I was hooked. I took a ceramics class senior year at Duglass College with well-known potter Hui Ka Kwong, and discovered my passion. After graduation, in 1971, I moved to Ann Arbor, bought my 1st wheel, and the next summer I did my1st art fair, the Ann Arbor Free Art Fair and sold $100 worth of pottery (what I made at my 40hr a week clerk typist job). I knew I'd found my life's work.
From 1972 to about 2000, the pottery I sold at juried art Fairs around the country and to shops, and galleries were 1st stoneware, and then porcelain, with jeweltone glazes of plum, teal, green, and turquoise.
In 1999, a friend encouraged me to write on my pottery. Having degree in journalism, I knew the power of words. I tried a few bowls with friend sayings, wedding messages, and some words of wisdom. My daughter pointed out that I needed a daughter saying and it exploded into a complete line of wheelthrown bowls, vases, vessels, and other thrown pieces with hand-lettered inspirational sayings about family, friends, chocolate, wine, love, wisdom, and other popular themes that embrace my philosophy of life. I had found a way to merge my love of words with my love of pottery.
As the customers in my booth usually spend quite a bit of time reading to find the perfect saying, I often learn the story behind their choice. That is what makes each purchase unique. It gives me great joy to create custom pieces, which can be written in any language.
