Creative Writing Camp
Teacher: Laura Kepner
Does your imagination take you to far off lands? Do you see certain situations a little differently than others? Have you ever created people, or even creatures, that only exist in stories you tell? You might be a writer! If so, this summer camp is for you. We will spend time inside and outside, creating poetry, short stories, developing characters, and expanding our imaginations through object prompts and made-up words. Who knew writing could be so much fun? Young writers will learn about using senses in stories, building believable dialogue, how to start with a hook and end with a surprise, and much more. You don’t have to know everything about writing to participate in this camp, just be willing to try new things and to express yourself through a mighty pen!
On the final day of camp, writers can share their favorite project during a kids open mic. Family and friends will be invited. All supplies are included. Please wear comfortable shoes and sunscreen and bring a lunch and a refillable water bottle.

Writer Wednesdays at SHAMc
Every Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to noon, writers will meet to read their work. Depending on the number of participants, they can expect to share at least twice (either the same story or a different one). Once the piece is read aloud, the facilitator will offer an in-depth conversation about the story/chapter/essay, including its strengths and what it might need to make it more engaging and memorable. She may also suggest websites, books, or other helpful learning tools.
Participants should bring the first or second (or third or fourth!) draft of a completed short story, article, essay, -or chapter from a book in progress, along with at least three extra copies. Please use an easy-to-read font such as Calibri, Arial, or Times New Roman in black ink. Pages should be numbered and font should be 12-point. Double space lines and indent each new paragraph. Writers should plan to bring up to 8 pages. They will be given assigned days to share their work but should attend each meeting to learn from the comments given to fellow students. Every participant should bring their piece to the first class.
Note: While this class will be run slightly similar to a critique group, the instructor will be the one to offer suggestions for improvement as well as highlighting areas of strength, while also encouraging comments from fellow students.
Fee: $150 for either session (includes 5 consecutive classes).
Session Two: 10:00 a.m. to noon - April 5, 12, 19, 26, May 3
Laura Kepner is the author of A Brief History of Safety Harbor Florida; Images of America, Safety Harbor; and When Lourdes Was Big. She has won awards for her fiction and currently writes for Creative Pinellas/Arts Coast Journal and Destination Tampa Bay.

Writer Wednesdays at SHAMc Every Wednesday between 10:00 a.m. to noon, local author Laura Kepner will help writers develop their fiction and creative non-fiction skills in a fun, encouraging environment. Writers of every experience level are welcome to participate, from beginner to pro, whether writing a novel, a memoir, compelling articles, or short stories. Week one of each month will focus on character formation, from their birth in your imagination to their conflicts and how those shape personality and growth, essential to the development of plot. For example, one week the class may discuss dialogue while another week participants will learn about a character’s backstory and how to incorporate it into a story. Week two of each month will center on plot. Every page turning story must contain a plot. The plot begins on page one and continues until the final word in your story or novel. What is plot? It’s the problem or situation that your character/s must overcome through roadblocks and challenges to climax and resolution. It must be resolved in some way by the end. Each month, the class will look at different methods for building plot, including the Hero’s Journey, formula writing, and more. Week three of each month will be about setting. In building a world for your characters, whether it be in the middle of suburbia or in a completely new dimension, you will need to convey what it looks like, how it smells, the language and culture of this habitat, enough so it becomes a memorable place in readers’ minds. Week four of each month will be all about tense, voice, point of view, sentence structure, and more. Learning early on how to draw upon your “writers’ toolbox” well, will save time later. Individual classes pay as you go-$40 January Tickets available 4 pac of classes for January $120.00 Jan 4,11,18,25 2023 Multiple class discounts available speak to Laura Payment will also be accepted the day of class but please email Laura to reserve a spot: SafetyHarborWritersGroup@gmail.com Laura Kepner is the author of Images of America, Safety Harbor; the children’s picture book When Lourdes Was Big; co-author of A Brief History of Safety Harbor, Florida, and she was the editor-in-chief for Odet, a 4-volume literary journal. New Years Ritual- ‘New Reality Collage’ Sunday January 15, 2023 11am- 5pm $75 per person Rather than all the New Year’s Resolutions that people make, that never seem to take hold, take a different approach. Experience creating a whole new reality with this deep, rich and powerful exercise facilitated by local artist, Heather Rippert. Complete 2022 and Create 2023! We will start with a circle to connect and get related with one another. Then we will dive into a series of questions to explore and reflect on your experiences of 2022. This exercise is something I have done annually for the past 12 years. It is one of my favorite things of the year, because it is highly effective. After we complete the exercise/series of questions that really ‘completes’ 2022, we will enjoy our bagged lunches and talk some more. Following lunch, we will each work on our own ‘New Reality Collage’ for 2023. I hang my Collage in my art studio every year where I see it all the time. Watch the magic unfold from completing this practice! |
